Nation’s top teams face tough road to No. 1 spot

first_imgSeven weeks of upsets, domination and struggle have already come and gone in the world of college football. With the midway point to the season now upon us, legitimate BCS talk begins. The first BCS rankings released Sunday put Alabama, Florida, Oregon, Kansas St. and Notre Dame at the top. Each team owns a perfect 6-0 record, but with six more games to be played, will all, or any, remain in the top 5?The No. 1 Crimson Tide show no real weaknesses, but their competition will drastically improve in the second half of the season. The toughest game left on their schedule will be the much-anticipated SEC West rivalry against LSU on Nov. 3. Although suffering a loss to Florida in Week 6, the No. 6 Tigers turned things around quickly, proving they are still a huge threat with a key win over South Carolina Saturday. Also left on the docket is undefeated No. 12 Mississippi State and No. 18 Texas A&M. While Alabama has not played a ranked team since then-No. 8 Michigan in Week 1, it seems unlikely Alabama will succumb to any of these upcoming threats. Their defense, ranked top in the nation averaging just 7.5 points allowed per game, is supported by Heisman hopeful AJ McCarron, their quarterback who has led the offense to average just over 40 points per game.Alabama looks like it will march its way to another national championship game. Rated No.1 since Week 2 and with a favorable schedule, there shouldn’t be much change at the top spot in the polls.Alongside Alabama, the No. 5 Fighting Irish could very well make it to 12-0. While they have a tough schedule still ahead, Notre Dame has proven this season they can take on, and defeat, quality teams. So far they have downed Michigan, Michigan State and, most recently, Stanford.Linebacker Manti Te’o is undoubtedly one of the best defensive players in the nation right now. Recording 11 tackles against Stanford, what perhaps is most impressive about Te’o is that 11 tackles is right around his average each game. In six games he has made 57 tackles, averaging 9.5 a game.Notre Dame will play No. 9 Oklahoma in two weeks and then No. 10 USC to end the season, both games on the road. For both opponents, offense is their strength, but Te’o and the Fighting Irish defense average the second fewest points allowed per game with 8.7. If the Irish offense can post several scores, they have a good chance at beating Oklahoma.USC is going to be the biggest challenge. Having their hopes at a perfect season and a spot in the national championship game ruined in Week 2, the Trojans now play a spoiler role this second half of the season as they fight for a BCS bowl game spot. Notre Dame’s fate will likely come down to this final game.USC also has the potential to devastate their Pac-12 rival, No. 3 Oregon. The Ducks have remained in the top 5 this first part of the season, but have yet to face any real challenges. Their explosive offense led by running back De’Anthony Thomas has picked apart every defensive opponent, scoring 42 points or more in all six games. Three conference games against ranked teams like USC, No. 20 Stanford and No. 8 Oregon State will finally test the Ducks. USC and Stanford have each suffered a loss already this season and both do not want to make it two.Oregon’s defense is nothing special. While they shut out Arizona, they have given up an average of 24 points in the other five games against teams that are not near the caliber of these three upcoming opponents. With an even tougher schedule ahead of them, No. 2 Florida will also have to fight hard in order to keep its top five status as well. After beating LSU without even allowing the Tigers a touchdown, Florida earned its spot in the top five. But No. 2? That could be a stretch. The Gators barely escaped Texas A&M back in Week 2 and even against LSU they were unable to put a score on the board until the second half. With No. 7 South Carolina and No. 11 Georgia back-to-back in the next two weeks, I don’t see Florida making it out untouched. Quarterback Jeff Driskel showed his ability to run on Saturday, rushing for 177 yards against Vanderbilt for three touchdowns. However, a much tougher South Carolina defense awaits the Gators in the near future. And even if they do push through to 8-0, a trip to Tallahassee to face Florida State to end the season could also spell out a loss. Finally, there is the case of the No. 4 Kansas State Wildcats, who have taken the Big 12 by storm this year. They will travel to play No. 13 West Virginia Saturday, with Mountaineer quarterback Geno Smith looking to regain his prominence in the Heisman race. However, West Virginia’s defense is ranked an abysmal 112th in the nation in points against, and Wildcats’ quarterback Collin Klein will exploit this. If Kansas State can get to 7-0, they still face several strong Big 12 opponents. It’s going to be a tough road for the Wildcats in conference play.So who is going to join the top five then? If South Carolina can get by Florida, the rest of their schedule poses no serious threats. They remain the team to beat in the SEC East.Whatever the case is, it’s still evident there is plenty of football to play and the rankings at the top will always change. But that’s the fun of the game.Follow Caroline on Twitterlast_img read more

Ohio Ag Weather and Forecast — January 24, 2018

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest 180124_RyanMartinToday should be the coldest day of the week over most of the state. We saw cold air start to blast in behind a second cold front yesterday, and today, Canadian high pressure drifts right over the top of Ohio. This will keep temps mostly below freezing over a majority of the state, but down south we can see temps do slightly better. We also expect more sun through the day today than we have seen this week so far.Tomorrow will not see good southwest winds develop until late in the day. So, we likely see temps a little better than today, but will put full moderation of temps off for 1 more day. The winds pick up in intensity going into Friday, and that will be where we see the biggest temperatures jump. Friday temps will be well above normal statewide, followed by similar conditions SaturdayRains move into Ohio later Saturday in the afternoon, although clouds build sooner than that. Rains Saturday into early Sunday still look to be from .25”-1”, with the lower end of the range north and west, and the upper end of the range in south and east. The map shows rain totals through midday Sunday. Cold air rushing in behind the front for Sunday still looks like it will not catch up to some of the moisture over the eastern part of the state, so at this time, we are taking mention of snow out of our Sunday forecast. The moisture looks to be more compact along this front and not drawn out, so that limits the chances. In fact, we see no serious precipitation by Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening. . However, cold air will move over the state Sunday, as Canadian high pressure returns and temps go below normal.North and northwest winds may create a bit of lake effect snow on Monday, but accumulations are minor. The normal lake effect areas will be watched closely, but only flurries are expected in many areas.Southwest winds are back for Wednesday, making another high on our temperature roller coaster. WE expect above normal temps for Wednesday and Thursday as we flip the calendar. However, those southwest winds at midweek may be running from 15-30 mph, meaning wind chills will be in play and it will not be an exceptionally nice set up. Still, 40s and 50s can move in under the right circumstances.Strong winds usually signal a significant event upcoming. And, as we move into the 2nd, we could be looking at a very interesting storm complex. We had been watching a significant event for late the 3rd into the 4th, and that looks to come a little quicker now. The European model has nearly all the moisture coming with the cold air, meaning we would be looking at epic snows. However, other models are not as sure as of yet. An all snow set up looks tantalizing, but also does not look right to us this morning. We think we will see rain to start, and then a changeover to snow as cold air arrives. But, either way, the liquid available to this system would be upwards of 1 inch, meaning whatever happens, liquid equivalent precipitation will be significant. This is a system to watch, and we will be quick to update our thoughts as we move forward. The extended period has a minor clipper for the 4th into the 5th, and another clipper around the 8th. Cold air will be in for the entire area as we start off February, and that means these clippers will likely bring additional light snow.last_img read more

Strata Allows You to Play Fantasy Football – With Scientists

Call it Madden NSF.Dr. Lisa Colledge, project manager for Strata, identified the problem that gave rise to its creation: “At the end of the day everything comes back to resources.” Whether you’re putting together a team for a research project, applying for a grant, evaluating grant applications or looking to prove your own worth to a project or institution, a modeling tool that can quantify that worth dynamically and justify the expenses involved could be valuable. The tool is a dynamic, customizable modeler that allows a user to add and subtract scientists and specialists to a team and anticipate the change that would make in the team’s efficiency. A set of tabs allow changes to benchmarks, personnel and influence over time (on science in general, not just a specific project). The interface is very recognizable, with drag-and-drop scientists (is this the first time that phrase has ever been written?), which outputs into various charts and graphs. In much the same way that a football player in a fantasy league or video game would be represented by his stats, so is the scientist or specialist in question. According to Dr. Colledge, the scientists are represented by a range of data, from SciVerse Scopus, an abstract and indexing database, articles from all kind of publications and references in those publications, as well as output and citation data which can be customized, and is dynamic and current. What are the chances of those of us at home playing along? (Who wouldn’t want a chance to see how Niels Bohr and Stephen Hawking would effect the development of the steam engine? Or whether Marie Curie or Richard Feynman would be more effective in helping Danny Dunn with his homework machine?) Slight. The tool is sold to universities and other research institutions and users will need to belong to one. If such a tool is even roughly analogous with academic journals, the cost would prove prohibitive for the Average BA-holding Joe. Maybe an academic game company could license the engine and data and give us the Max Planck-Laura Maria Caterina Bassi smackdown for which we have so long waited. 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex…last_img read more

Ram Rahim withdraws parole plea

first_imgJailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh on Monday withdrew his parole application, which applied for farming at his fields in Haryana’s Sirsa.“He withdrew his parole application on Monday,” a senior official of Haryana Prisons Department said, refusing to divulge further details. Ram Rahim, behind bars at Sunaria jail in Haryana’s Rohtak district after being convicted in two rape cases and murder case of a journalist, had sought 42 days of parole to look after his fields in Sirsa district. Following his application for the parole, the jail superintendent had written to the Sirsa district administration. In a letter dated June 18, the official had sought a report whether releasing Ram Rahim on parole would be feasible or not. In the communique, the jail superintendent had mentioned that Dera Sacha Sauda chief’s conduct in the jail had been good and he had not violated any rule. The Sirsa district administration had been asked to submit a report to the Rohtak division commissioner with a copy marked to the jail superintendent. On receiving the letter, the Sirsa Police had approached the Revenue Department to ascertain how much land the Dera chief owns. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had last month said a decision on the parole application of Dera Sacha Sauda chief would be taken keeping in view the interests of the state. “Anyone who is entitled for parole can seek one. We cannot stop anyone,” Mr. Khattar had said. A parole application is filed before a jail superintendent who forwards it to the deputy commissioner concerned. Then a report is sought from the superintendent of police and, in the end, a recommendation is made by the divisional commissioner. In August 2017, the Dera chief was sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping two women. A special CBI court in Panchkula had in January this year also sentenced him and three others to life imprisonment for the murder of a journalist over 16 years ago.last_img read more
