Burnley have announced the double signing of striker Marvin Sordell from Bolton and former West Ham midfielder Matt Taylor. Press Association Sordell previously worked under Burnley boss Sean Dyche at Watford, the club with who he made his Football League debut. Taylor, 32, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Clarets after the conclusion this summer of his West Ham contract. He is another ex-Bolton man and played for Portsmouth before that. Those arrivals are the second and third this week for Burnley after they announced on Wednesday that former Blackpool goalkeeper Matt Gilks had joined them. The other player to sign for them this summer has been Michael Kightly, who had been on loan from Stoke last term and has now made the move permanent. Burnley are preparing for their return to the Premier League after clinching promotion from the Sky Bet Championship at the end of 2013/14. Sordell has made his switch for an undisclosed fee, the 23-year-old agreeing a deal that could keep him at Turf Moor until 2017. He spent last season on loan from Bolton at Charlton, for who he scored eight goals, and has been capped 14 times for England Under-21s.

Call it Madden NSF.Dr. Lisa Colledge, project manager for Strata, identified the problem that gave rise to its creation: “At the end of the day everything comes back to resources.” Whether you’re putting together a team for a research project, applying for a grant, evaluating grant applications or looking to prove your own worth to a project or institution, a modeling tool that can quantify that worth dynamically and justify the expenses involved could be valuable. The tool is a dynamic, customizable modeler that allows a user to add and subtract scientists and specialists to a team and anticipate the change that would make in the team’s efficiency. A set of tabs allow changes to benchmarks, personnel and influence over time (on science in general, not just a specific project). The interface is very recognizable, with drag-and-drop scientists (is this the first time that phrase has ever been written?), which outputs into various charts and graphs. In much the same way that a football player in a fantasy league or video game would be represented by his stats, so is the scientist or specialist in question. According to Dr. Colledge, the scientists are represented by a range of data, from SciVerse Scopus, an abstract and indexing database, articles from all kind of publications and references in those publications, as well as output and citation data which can be customized, and is dynamic and current. What are the chances of those of us at home playing along? (Who wouldn’t want a chance to see how Niels Bohr and Stephen Hawking would effect the development of the steam engine? Or whether Marie Curie or Richard Feynman would be more effective in helping Danny Dunn with his homework machine?) Slight. The tool is sold to universities and other research institutions and users will need to belong to one. If such a tool is even roughly analogous with academic journals, the cost would prove prohibitive for the Average BA-holding Joe. Members of a Special Investigation Team here on Tuesday searched the hostel room of the student who has accused BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand of raping and “physically exploiting” her for a year. The SIT members, accompanied by forensic experts, spent nearly six hours at the hostel room to collect evidence in connection with her allegations against the former Union Minister, college sources said. The student and her family members accompanied the SIT members during the search, they said. The team, which reached the hostel around noon, remained there till 5.45 pm, examining the postgraduate student’s belongings. After the search, the room was locked and sealed. The SIT, headed by Inspector General Naveen Arora, was set up by the Uttar Pradesh government on a Supreme Court directive. The college principal said though the room in which the student was staying was meant for two people, but she lived there alone. No rape case yetPolice sources said no rape case was registered till Tuesday evening against Mr. Chinmayanand after she lodged a zero FIR in New Delhi. The woman appeared before the press on Monday, alleging that the BJP leader had raped her, and also “physically exploited” her for one year. She told mediapersons that the Shahjahanpur police were reluctant to register a rape case against the 72-year-old former MP. “On Sunday, the SIT quizzed me for about 11 hours. I told them about the rape. Even after telling them everything, they have not arrested Chinmayanand yet,” she said. She alleged that when her father lodged a complaint with the police here about her physical exploitation, Shahjahanpur District Magistrate Indra Vikram Singh “issued threats”, asking him to file “a missing complaint” instead. “I have all the proof. The hostel room where I lived has been sealed. It should be opened in front of the media,” she said, adding that she would give the proof, including video clips, at an opportune time. “He (Chinmayanand) has ruined lives of many girls. I am the only one to muster the courage and stand up,” she added.

Alexis Sánchez FA Cup: talking points from the action in the third round City came close to buying Sánchez in the summer before the prospective transfer fell down on the final day following a bid worth a total £60m. Arsenal were intent they would first have to buy a replacement but were unable to sign Monaco’s Thomas Lemar, despite being willing to meet the £92m asking price.Sánchez has become a divisive figure in the Arsenal dressing room and some of his team-mates think it would be best for the club to sell him this month.Guardiola has also revived his interest in West Bromwich Albion’s Jonny Evans. The centre-back, like Sánchez, came close to joining City in the summer but Guardiola later stated the club could not afford West Brom’s £25m valuation.City’s manager had hoped to sign Virgil van Dijk this month but, with the Dutch defender having joined Liverpool, he has turned to Evans. The 30-year-old has little or no sell-on potential but, given Vincent Kompany’s chronic injury issues, Guardiola needs to strengthen in the position. Evans, a former Manchester United defender, is a Premier League winner and has Champions League experience, two competitions Guardiola is intent on claiming this season for City.Arsenal are thought to retain an interest in Evans, too. The Northern Irishman’s preference is a return to the north-west for family reasons, though he is keeping his options open. Share on Messenger Manchester City Manchester City are set to make a fresh bid for Alexis Sánchez, with the club believing the Chilean can be prised from Arsenal this month. The forward is due to become a free agent in the close season so his price would be expected to be around £30m.Gabriel Jesus’s knee injury has increased Pep Guardiola’s desire to sign Sánchez. The Brazilian sustained a medial collateral injury in the draw at Crystal Palace on New Year’s Eve and is expected to miss the next two months. It’s a heavy loss we’ve conceded (at Fulham). We will need for sure a little bit longer than only 30 minutes afterwards to deal with it.”December wasn’t our month, obviously. Barrett, out of Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Texas orally committed Wednesday to play for OSU after he graduates from high school in 2013. During his junior year, Barrett completed 102 of 171 passes for 1,605 yards, as he threw for 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
